Senior Editing Film Teacher Jamal Speaks
has provided a new learning opportunity to students at Sun Valley High School. Mr. Speaks has created a custom learning environment focused on Digital Recording and Film Editing for every individual student at SVHS. This opportunity provides students the chance to succeed in a career in a multi-billion dollar industry.
Hot Supper Meals Everyday After school Hot supper meals to be served after school. Open to the community up to the age of 18 or any age if disabled.

Hollywood, the Entertainment Capital of the World, is where every actor, director and producer wants to be. Thanks to a program called “Scripts 2 Screens,” students at the Sun Valley High Film Academy got the chance to experience it for themselves.
In a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity, students worked with the New York Film Academy (NYFA). They wrote, directed and produced their own silent short films and shot them on “Wisteria Lane,” the setting for ABC’s “Desperate Housewives,” on the back lot of Universal Studios. It was an amazing opportunity for the film students to learn from some of the best in the business. NYFA students and alumni mentored the Sun Valley film students and lent their expertise and knowledge of the film industry.
Many of the Sun Valley High students have never been outside their own communities, but being involved in this mentoring program has opened up another world for them. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I never thought possible,” said Ariadna Pena, a senior who will be graduating in June. “I learned so much about production and the responsibilities of becoming future filmmaker.” Added classmate Kathy Castillo, “It was a surreal experience that I will cherish forever. The SVHS Film Academy has taught me a lot about film and life.”
The SVHS Film Academy is on the rise with the construction of the $500,000 “I’M-Possible” Studio/Soundstage with, funding from the Career Technical Education Incentive Grant. Seeing the talent and potential of my students has been awesome. All they needed was someone to tell them they are great and capable of doing great things.
My responsibility is to make this opportunity available to my students at no monetary cost, and to set the bar high for educational value. Character, honesty and integrity are what they will receive when being a part of this program.
In addition, with the discussion about the lack of diversity in the Motion Picture Academy during the last awards season, I believe these students will help make the change needed and be the beacons of light for great storytelling.
